Originally from Michigan, Dr. Hanawalt came to Ft. Collins after completing Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training.
His high school years were spent in Burlingame, California. Dr. Hanawalt then returned to the Midwest and graduated with a BA in Zoology from Miami University (Ohio) at Oxford.
Dr. Hanawalt’s professional dental education was completed at the University of Michigan. After graduation he was commissioned a lieutenant in the US Navy Dental Corps and spent 3 years in the Navy as a general dentist. Much of this time was spent on independent (unsupervised) duty, a great challenge for a new graduate and a valuable learning experience.
His oral and maxillofacial surgery training was completed at Boston University and the Jacksonville Hospitals (associated with the University of Florida).
Until recently Dr. Hanawalt was for many years an oral surgeon on staff at Poudre Valley Hospital. In this capacity he managed hundreds of cases involving facial fractures and other facial and dental trauma, major jaw surgeries to correct the bite, major infections of the dentofacial regions, major jaw bone grafts and others.
Dr. Hanawalt now limits his practice to office-based oral and maxillofacial surgery. His major professional interests are the surgical management of wisdom teeth and dentoalveolar surgery, dental implants, infection, oral pathology, bone grafting, and anesthesia.
Dr. Hanawalt is a DIPLOMATE of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (board certified) and a FELLOW of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, a FELLOW of the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, a FELLOW of the American Dental Society of Anesthesia, a member of the American Association of Implant Dentistry and a member of the local, state, and national components of the American Dental Association.
Dr. Hanawalt does not play golf although it is expected of him! He is an avid pilot and often escapes to bore holes in the sky in his little airplane, "Dream Girl".
